What is electric ducted fan?
Electric ducted fans (EDFs) are integrated propulsions systems consisting of a multi-bladed fan, a high-power-density electric motor, and a shroud surrounding the fan and motor.
Do fans create high pressure?
The airflow created by centrifugal fans is directed through a system of ducts or tubes. This helps create a higher pressure airflow than axial fans. Despite a lower flow rate, centrifugal fans create a steadier flow of air than axial fans. Centrifugal fans also require a higher power input.
How much thrust does a 50 cm fan produce?
Note that thrust is shown as depending on the fourth power of diameter, sixteen 50cm propellers will therfore produce about 1000 x the thrust of two 15 cm propellers of the same design at the same RPM. It seems you need to be careful when comparing ducted fans with propellers.
How can I increase the thrust of a fan given?
Thrust can be further increased by increasing blade pitch and increasing number of blades, each increase requires an increase in power as well. Unfortunately the research does not mention power required for each thrust config found, but: Appendix A has some provisional power curves for other rotors used in the project.
How much mass can a rotor fan lift?
A 15cm diameter fan could maybe lift 4 KG of mass with a tip speed of 0.6M. By increasing the power and the blade chord length (in other words, increasing the solidity of the rotor), this may be increased to maybe 6KG or more, but a single fan would probably never lift more than 10KG mass. The thrust of a rotor is .
Which is better a ducted fan or a propeller?
A large, slow propeller may be more effective, but it may be easier for an electric motor to turn a smaller fan faster: eg due to lack of gearing required, and the differing power delivery. That doesn’t make a ducted fan better than a propeller, but it could reduce some of the disadvantages usually faced.
