What is ETag tracking?

What is ETag tracking?

ETags or Entity Tags is a web cache validation technique for identifying users or rather resources visiting a website. It is a unique key-value pair tagged to a browser. These etags are elements which are cached by the browser, and returned to the web server when the said element is requested a second time.

Where are ETags stored?

browser cache
ETag (HTTP Entity Tag) is a unique identifier, which is transmitted in the HTTP-header and stored in the browser cache together with images and other temporary files.

How to use ETag?

Step by step:

  1. we first create and retrieve a Resource – and store the ETag value for further use.
  2. then we update the same Resource.
  3. send a new GET request, this time with the “If-None-Match” header specifying the ETag that we previously stored.

How do you get an ETag?

What you need

  1. your personal or business details.
  2. the vehicle’s details, including the state the vehicle is registered in (it doesn’t have to be NSW)
  3. your Australian Business Number (ABN) or Australian Company Number (ACN) (if applicable)
  4. payment for your tag security deposit, and the account’s opening credit.

What is the use of ETag?

An entity tag (ETag) is an HTTP header used for Web cache validation and conditional requests from browsers for resources. Etags use persistent identification elements (PIE) that have been tagged to the user’s browser.

How is ETag generated?

Common methods of ETag generation include using a collision-resistant hash function of the resource’s content, a hash of the last modification timestamp, or even just a revision number. Some earlier checksum functions that were weaker than CRC32 or CRC64 are known to suffer from hash collision problems.

What happens if you don’t have an ETAG?

What happens if I use a toll road without a tag or pass? If you don’t make an arrangement to pay within 3 days of the trip, the toll road operator will issue a toll notice to the registered operator of the vehicle. The toll notice requests the toll charge plus an administration fee. More information about toll notices.

How are ETags used to track a resource?

If the resource at a given URL changes, a new Etag value must be generated. A comparison of them can determine whether two representations of a resource are the same. Etags are therefore similar to fingerprints, and might also be used for tracking purposes by some servers. They might also be set to persist indefinitely by a tracking server.

Is there a way to prevent trackers in edge?

While preventing trackers increases your privacy, you might want to create exceptions for certain trusted websites. This will allow all trackers on those sites, including potentially harmful ones. In Microsoft Edge, select Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services. Make sure Tracking prevention is set to On.

What does it mean when a weak ETag is used?

Weak ETag values of two representations of the same resources might be semantically equivalent, but not byte-for-byte identical. This means weak etags prevent caching when byte range requests are used, but strong etags mean range requests can still be cached.

How can I make an exception for tracking prevention?

Make sure Tracking prevention is set to On. Under Tracking prevention, select Exceptions. Select Add a site, type in the full URL, and then select Add. You can also create an exception directly from the site. Go to the site you want to add as an exception for tracking prevention.
