What is forecast density?
A histogram (or density forecast) that assigns probabilities to inflation falling in certain intervals will be more informative about the likelihood of the target being met. That said, the forecast histogram will only be of value to the extent that the forecast probabilities accurately capture the true probabilities.
What is a point forecast?
Point forecasts are the most common. and simple type of forecasts, and take the form of a single number that conveys the forecaster’s expectation as to the most. likely outcome.
What is internal forecast?
internal forecast: A sales forecast based on a build-up, or consensus, of forecasts through the firm’s own sales channels.
Can a point forecast be made without a prediction interval?
If we only produce point forecasts, there is no way of telling how accurate the forecasts are. However, if we also produce prediction intervals, then it is clear how much uncertainty is associated with each forecast. For this reason, point forecasts can be of almost no value without the accompanying prediction intervals.
The further ahead we forecast, the more uncertainty is associated with the forecast, and thus the wider the prediction intervals. That is, σh σ h usually increases with h h (although there are some non-linear forecasting methods that do not have this property).
Which is the best way to plot prediction intervals?
When plotted, the prediction intervals are shown as shaded region, with the strength of colour indicating the probability associated with the interval. When a normal distribution for the forecast errors is an unreasonable assumption, one alternative is to use bootstrapping, which only assumes that the forecast errors are uncorrelated.
Why do we use multipliers for prediction intervals?
