What is hierarchical pathfinding?
The idea is to separate a map into multiple levels of clusters and to precompute information on how to navigate between clusters so that we can use this information later to do pathfinding on a higher level. This method mainly addresses the issue of pathfinding in real-time.
What is path finding in AI?
Pathfinding or pathing is the plotting, by a computer application, of the shortest route between two points. It is a more practical variant on solving mazes. This field of research is based heavily on Dijkstra’s algorithm for finding the shortest path on a weighted graph.
Why are pathfinding algorithms important?
Why are they important? Path finding algorithms are important because they are used in applications like google maps, satellite navigation systems, routing packets over the internet.
Are there any optimizations for hierarchical pathfinding?
There are some good conceptual optimizations but we will talk about two of them: the HPA and the JPS. Hierarchical pathfinding is based on pre-processing a lower level pathfinding to the destination, that lower level will be spared in clusters, which its distances and optimal paths to each other are precomputed.
How does the a * work in pathfinding?
As we can see in the image, starting at the white center square, the A* searches the squares around him and follows the nearest square to the destination. When it finds the destination, it returns the path following the parent of every square, being the parent the square where they have been expanded from.
Why is pathfinding so slow in Minecraft?
Pathfinding is an important resource on many games, the basic algorithms like BFS, DJikstra or A* may work fine on some games, but in some cases, especially on large maps, they can be slow and make your game stops for a moment until it finds the path or slow the game.
