What is index full scan in Oracle?
Index full scan is a mechanism where Oracle does not read all the required entries from the index by traversing the tree from top to leaf for the rows. Instead, it traverses the tree from top to bottom on “the left side” of the index.
What is index unique scan in Oracle?
The INDEX UNIQUE SCAN performs the tree traversal only. The Oracle database uses this operation if a unique constraint ensures that the search criteria will match no more than one entry. INDEX RANGE SCAN. The INDEX RANGE SCAN performs the tree traversal and follows the leaf node chain to find all matching entries.
Which index is fast?
A clustered index would be the fastest for that SELECT , but it may not necessarily be correct choice. A clustered index determines the order in which records are physically stored (which is why you can only have one per table).
How do you do an index range scan?
The index range scan starts at the root block. Then, traverses the branch blocks to find the first leaf block that contains relevant data. When it gets to a leaf block, it is the leaf block with the “lowest” value (assuming a normal ascending range scan, there are descending scans as well).
How to force a full index scan in Oracle?
Hence, an ORDER BY clause will require an additional sorting operation. Oracle provides a SQL hint to force a full-index scan. You can also force a fast full-index scan by specifying the index_ffs hint, and this is commonly combined with the parallel_index hint to improve performance.
Why do we use single block io in index range scan?
We know we are done. An index range scan uses single block IO’s because the blocks in the branches and leafs are not contiguous with respect to each other – they are scattered randomly throughout the tablespace. it depends, it depends on the plan and the nature of the query.
When to use index full scan or full table scan?
Index full scan Oracle will choose an index full scan when the CBO statistics that indicate that a full-index scan is going to be more efficient than a full-table scan and a sort of the result set.
