What is meant by field of view?
Field of view (FOV) is the maximum area of a sample that a camera can image. It is related to two things, the focal length of the lens and the sensor size. The focal length of the lens describes the distance between the lens and the focused image on the sensor.
How is field of view measured?
The FOV can be measured horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Shorter focal lengths will have a wider FOV than longer focal lengths. The horizontal and vertical fields of view define the frame lines at a given distance. (Note that some people use Field of View to mean the same thing as Angle of View).
How can I tell the resolution of an image?
In order to calculate this resolution you just use the same formula you would use for the area of any rectangle; multiply the length by the height. For example, if you have a photo that has 4,500 pixels on the horizontal side, and 3,000 on the vertical size it gives you a total of 13,500,000.
What is normal field of view?
A normal visual field is an island of vision measuring 90 degrees temporally to central Fixation, 50 degrees superiorly and nasally, and 60 degrees inferiorly. Visual acuity increases from movement discrimination in the extreme peripheral vision to better than 20/20 in the center of vision.
What is the difference between field of view and resolution?
Field of view is the angular extent of the image scene and resolution is the number of pixels on target. See the figures below for examples. The first shows a patterned semiconductor wafer and the relative area or FOV each of several cameras sees given the same optics, distance from the sample, etc.
How are field of view and working distance related?
The size of the field of view and the size of the camera’s imager directly affect the image resolution (one determining factor in accuracy). Working distance is the distance between the back of the lens and the target object.
What is the field of view of a lens?
The basic purpose of a lens of any kind is to collect the light scattered by an object and recreate an image of the object on a light-sensitive ‘sensor’ (usually CCD or CMOS based). Field of View (FoV): total area that can be viewed by the lens and imaged onto the camera sensor.
How does pixel size affect field of view?
Pixel size factors into the resolution obtainable with a given setup and is one way to match an appropriate camera and telescope. For more details, visit the Understanding Image Scale and Field of View page. Remember that not all telescope/camera combinations actually work, although the calculator will let you make any combination.
