What is mesh quality and how determine quality of mesh?
The quality of a mesh can be assessed by different metrics that are usually based upon the geometrical properties of the mesh cells (e.g. Aspect ratio) or upon the relation between neighboring cells (e.g. non-orthogonality).
What is a good mesh aspect ratio?
The aspect ratio is defined as the ratio of the shortest length of the element to the longest length of the element. A good mesh will, however, have nearly all of its elements with a small aspect ratio or a value less than 3.
How do I know my mesh size?
Figuring out the mesh number is simple. All you do is count the number of openings in one linear inch of screen. This count is the mesh number. A 4-mesh screen means there are four little square openings across one inch of screen.
What defines a good mesh?
Check the Size Transition of the Elements In general, a gradual change in element size functions makes for a better mesh for most models. A poor mesh will have a quick change in elements size, acute interior angles, and thin triangles.
How can I understand mesh quality and simulation results?
Rapid expansion of mesh size should be avoided, it will have influence on the flow smoothness. Orthogonality is the important mesh quality to check. Apart from the mesh metrics you should also ensure that the mesh has accuractely captured your geometry.
Why are there so many file formats for FEM?
The number of file formats for FEM is ridiculous, partly due to the fact that every software package implemented its own format in the past. (From xkcd .) I’ve created meshio to alleviate the pain of converting between formats, so if you use any format supported by meshio, you should be able to easily make a switch in the future.
What should the aspect ratio of a mesh be?
The aspect ratio is the ratio of longest edge length to shortest edge length. It should be equal to 1 for an ideal mesh. (Attention: It is less important in boundary layer mesh) It is one of the primary quality measures for a mesh.
What should the change in mesh spacing be?
Change in cell/element size should be gradual (smooth). Ideally, the maximum change in grid spacing should be <20%. (Means max change between two neighbor meshes should be around 1.2 ).
