What is Minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance?
Minimum redundancy feature selection is an algorithm frequently used in a method to accurately identify characteristics of genes and phenotypes and narrow down their relevance and is usually described in its pairing with relevant feature selection as Minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance (mRMR).
How mRMR algorithm works?
mRMR: This algorithm tends to select a subset of features having the most correlation with the class (output) and the least correlation between themselves [12]. It ranks features according to the minimal-redundancy-maximal-relevance criterion which is based on mutual information.
Why feature selection?
Feature selection methods are intended to reduce the number of input variables to those that are believed to be most useful to a model in order to predict the target variable. Feature selection is primarily focused on removing non-informative or redundant predictors from the model.
What is meant by data redundancy?
Data redundancy occurs when the same piece of data is stored in two or more separate places and is a common occurrence in many businesses.
What does MRMR mean?
MRMR
| Acronym | Definition |
|---|---|
| MRMR | Mining Rock Mass Rating |
| MRMR | Measured Resting Metabolic Rate (clinical nutrition) |
| MRMR | Mobilization Reserve Materiel Requirement |
What is redundancy in machine learning?
An attribute (column or feature of data set) is called redundant if it can be derived from any other attribute or set of attributes. Inconsistencies in attribute or dimension naming can also lead to the redundancies in data set.
What are the advantages of feature selection?
Three key benefits of performing feature selection on your data are: Reduces Overfitting: Less redundant data means less opportunity to make decisions based on noise. Improves Accuracy: Less misleading data means modeling accuracy improves. Reduces Training Time: Less data means that algorithms train faster.
What is data redundancy explain with an example?
Data redundancy is defined as the storing of the same data in multiple locations. An example of data redundancy is saving the same file five times to five different disks. For example, data can be stored on two or more disks or disk and tape or disk and the Internet.
Why is maximum relevance minimum redundancy called mRMR?
“Maximum Relevance – Minimum Redundancy” is so called because — at each iteration — we want to select the feature that has maximum relevance with respect to the target variable and minimum redundancy with respect to the features that have been selected at previous iterations.
What does mRMR stand for in engineering category?
MRMR (acronym for Maximum Relevance — Minimum Redundancy) is a feature selection algorithm that has gained new popularity after the pubblication — in 2019 — of this paper by Uber engineers: Screenshot from: source.
How does mRMR work in a real application?
In real applications, one can choose K based on domain knowledge or other constraints, such as model capacity, machine memory or time available. MRMR works iteratively. At each iteration, it identifies the best feature (according to a rule) and adds it to the basket of selected features.
How is the number k chosen in mRMR?
When using MRMR, you are basically required to make only one choice: deciding the number of features that you want to keep. We will call this number K. In our example, we will take K =3. In real applications, one can choose K based on domain knowledge or other constraints, such as model capacity, machine memory or time available.
