What is model specification in research?
Model specification is the process of determining which independent variables to include and exclude from a regression equation. The need for model selection often begins when a researcher wants to mathematically define the relationship between independent variables and the dependent variable.

Model specification error generally refers to errors of omission and errors of inclusion, meaning; omitting crucial variables from the model or entering useless variables into the model.

Specification bias arises when a potential independent variable – which is related to both the dependent variable and an included independent variable – is omitted from the model. The result is a biased estimate of the coefficient of the included variable (which is forced to play a double role).

Based on my own understanding, research project specification defines the statement of aims and objectives of the research as the aims and the objectives are those that the researcher needs to achieve in the study. Research questions define the direction of the study.
