What is Ngons?

What is Ngons?

An ngon is a face or polygon that is made up of five or more sides or edges connected by five or more vertices. Anything over a quad (4 sides) is considered an ngon.

What are tris and quads?

When modeling in 3D with polygons, it is important to construct all of your models using quads and triangles. A triangular polygon is referred to as a tri or triangle, and is a simple three-sided polygon. A square or rectangular polygon is referred to as a quad or quadrilateral polygon, and is a four-sided polygon.

Are Tris bad?

N-Gons with more than 4 sides and Tris are bad because they do not subdivide smoothly and so break up the flow of edges through a model. Tris are only bad when you need to smooth a mesh ie add subdivisions.

Why are triangles bad in blender?

In sculpting applications when you increase the density of the mesh a triangle will eventually cause slight pinching areas in the mesh based on the surface detail and displacement. Minor triangles shouldn’t cause problems as long as you don’t plan to animate the mesh later.

Is it OK to have NGons?

Although, with enough geometry and more or less uniform polygonal density meshes with ngons can bend reasonably well, but not perfect by any means. So if you know that the mesh isn’t going to be deformed, then it’s ok. If it is going to be deformed, proceed with caution.

Which is worse, a ngon or a triangle?

While triangles are a little more lenient and not as bad as ngons, they still can cause some issue at animation time. Topology that isn’t clean means a model that is going to be sent back to you for fixes.

Which is better a Tris or a Ngon?

Ngons should always be avoided and will cause undesired effects. Render engines may even have trouble importing models using them. Triangles: Or usually referred to as Tris for short is a single poly that consists of 3 vertices with edges connecting them.

What makes up the face of a Ngon?

An ngon is a face or polygon that is made up of five or more sides or edges connected by five or more vertices. Anything over a quad (4 sides) is considered an ngon.

Is there a limit to the number of ngons?

There is no limit to the number of points or sides an Ngon can have. 3d modelling can be a very technical task and there are a lot of methods that can be used to achieve the same result, as such there are a wide array of solutions to the same problems. This is one reason why there is much debate as to which method is correct.
