What is NTP offset delay jitter?
The offset column refers to the delay in reaching the server, in milliseconds. Offset references the difference between the local clock and the server’s clock. Finally, the jitter column refers to the network latency between your server and theirs.
What is jitter in NTP?
Jitter: The jitter associated with a timing reference indicates the magnitude of variance, or dispersion, of the signal. Different timing references have different amounts of jitter. The more accurate a timing reference, the lower the jitter value. Jitter is usually measure in milliseconds.
What are the problems with unsynchronized clocks?
Unsynchronized clocks can also affect automated tasks. If certain processes run out of sequence, such as transaction processing and backups, then the results of these processes may cause discrepancies, due to the transaction times failing to tally.
How to calculate the jitter of a NTP server?
While the jitter graphs are as follows: (Again 2x DCF77 daily/weekly with jitter of about 1000 µs = 1 ms, and 2x GPS daily/weekly with jitter of about 2 µs!!!) MRTG draws and calculates the peak only for positive values. Hence this black line in the offset graphs only appears in the upper half.
How does the Network Time Protocol ( NTP ) work?
NTP will compute some additional statistical values that describe the quality of time it sees. Among these values are: offset (or phase ), jitter (or dispersion ), frequency error, and stability (See also Section 3.3 ). Thus each NTP server will maintain an estimate of the quality of its reference clock s and of itself.
When does the ntpd algorithm apply for the first time?
Naturally, the algorithm is also applied when ntpd is started for the first time or after reboot. 5.1.1.5. What is a stratum 1 Server? A server operating at stratum 1 belongs to the class of best NTP servers available, because it has a reference clock (See What is a reference clock?) attached to it.
How to use ntpq on a monitoring server?
The monitoring server is then able to use ntpq with a remote host such as ntpq -c rv ntp1.weberlab.de. In fact these are normal NTP packets on the wire, but with NTP mode = 6, called “control message”. Refer to my blogpost “ Packet Capture: Network Time Protocol “.
