What is point wiring?
A method of connecting electronic components in a microphone, preamp, amplifier or any other piece of equipment in which each component is directly soldered to a tube pin or solder lug or jack.
What is a point to point wiring diagram?
Point-to-point diagrams contain the information necessary to make or follow all wire connections. This wiring diagram can be shown on the assembly drawing. The diagram on the assembly will be included only if it is practical, and if room is available. The point-to-point drawing will not have a parts list.
What are electrically common points?
Points directly connected together in a circuit by zero resistance (wire) are considered to be electrically common. Electrically common points, with zero resistance between them, will have zero voltage dropped between them, regardless of the magnitude of current (ideally).
How are connections made on a protoboard board?
Connections are typically made by either bridging solder from pad to pad, or by running wires (or the bent leads of the components) from pad to pad. Wires that jump off of the board are susceptible to being pulled, which can easily break the brittle solder joint.
What’s the best way to score a protoboard?
Using a straightedge as a guide, score both sides of the board with a sharp knife, then place the board on the edge of the table and snap it along the marks. If you make the score marks through the center of a line of holes, there will be less material to snap, and you’ll have better luck avoiding cracking.
Can a strain relief wire be pulled off a protoboard?
Strain Relief Wires that jump off of the board are susceptible to being pulled, which can easily break the brittle solder joint. For added strength, it’s a good idea to first run wires from above through a hole in the board so that any stress on the wire isn’t put directly on the solder joint.
When do you need a standoff for protoboard?
Standoffs are also vital when you are mounting your board in a metal enclosure, as you don’t want the component pins to short out on the enclosure. If you’ve never created a complex circuit on protoboard, it can seem a little daunting.
