What is quadratic loss function?
The quadratic loss function gives a measure of how accurate a predictive model is. It works by taking the difference between the predicted probability and the actual value – so it is used on classification schemes which produce probabilities (Naive Bayes for example).
What is a regression loss function?
The group of functions that are minimized are called “loss functions”. A loss function is a measure of how good a prediction model does in terms of being able to predict the expected outcome. A most commonly used method of finding the minimum point of function is “gradient descent”.
Why do we need to minimize cost function?
We need to put a penalty on making bad decisions or errors. A good model will make as few errors as possible, a bad one will make lots of errors. The cost for making those errors is measured by, well, a cost function.
Where does the error come from in machine learning?
In supervised machine learning algorithms, we want to minimize the error for each training example during the learning process. This is done using some optimization strategies like gradient descent. And this error comes from the loss function. What’s the Difference between a Loss Function and a Cost Function?
How does the MSE loss function penalize the model?
The MSE loss function penalizes the model for making large errors by squaring them. Squaring a large quantity makes it even larger, right? But there’s a caveat.
Why is the minimax loss function bad for Gan?
The original GAN paper notes that the above minimax loss function can cause the GAN to get stuck in the early stages of GAN training when the discriminator’s job is very easy. The paper therefore suggests modifying the generator loss so that the generator tries to maximize log D (G (z)).
Where does the formula for loss function come from?
The formula derives from the cross-entropy between the real and generated distributions. The generator can’t directly affect the log (D (x)) term in the function, so, for the generator, minimizing the loss is equivalent to minimizing log (1 – D (G (z))).
