What is server authentication in SSL?
SSL authentication stands for Secure Sockets Layer and is a protocol for creating a secure connection for user-server interactions. All web interactions involve both a server and a user. The way that a server verifies that the user is a real person is by collecting information.
Can SSL handshake protocol provide user authentication?
SSL-enabled servers can be configured to require client authentication, or cryptographic validation by the server of the client’s identity.
Is server authentication optional in SSL?
Server authentication The SSL provides client authentication as an additional level of authentication and access control. It enables a server to validates the certificates of a client at the server and thus prevents the client from obtaining a secure connection without an installation-approved certificate.
What is my server authentication?
An authentication server is an application that facilitates authentication of an entity that attempts to access a network. Such an entity may be a human user or another server. An authentication server can reside in a dedicated computer, an Ethernet switch, an access point or a network access server.
Which authentication in SSL is optional?
SSL client authentication is an option that provides extra security by determining which client applications are allowed to connect to the Gateway daemon. This builds on the security provided by SSL server authentication.
How do I enable SSL authentication?
To configure SSL on the server, perform the tasks in the following list, each of which is described below.
- If you have not yet configured SSL, specify server configuration.
- Set the Oracle wallet location.
- Set the SSL cipher suites (optional)
- Set the required SSL version (optional)
- Set SSL client authentication (optional)
How to authenticate a client certificate during SSL handshake?
To authenticate the binding between a public key and the server identified by the certificate that contains the public key, an SSL-enabled client must receive a yesanswer to the four questions shown in the following figure. Figure 5–9 Authenticating a Client Certificate During SSL Handshake
Which is omitted in one way SSL handshake?
In one-way SSL, the authenticity of the client is not being validated. Hence, this step is omitted in one-way SSL handshake. During this step, the server will send a certificate request from the client with the certificate type, certificate signature algorithms and certificate authorities [6] supported by the server.
What happens at the end of a certificate handshake?
In such scenarios, the client may choose whether to send or avoid sending of the client certificate (depends on the client implementation) Finally, the server sends the Server Hello Done message indicating the end of Server Hello. After sending this message, the server will wait for a client response.
Why is Step 4 important in the SSL handshake?
This step confirms that the server is actually located at the same network address specified by the domain name in the server certificate. Although step 4 is not technically part of the SSL protocol, it provides the only protection against a form of security attack known as man-in-the-middle.
