What is Spanwise?
: directed, moving, or placed along the span of an airfoil — compare chordwise.
What is Chordwise?
: directed, moving, or placed along the chord of an airfoil section — compare spanwise.
What is the Spanwise structure of the wing?
In a fixed-wing aircraft, the spar is often the main structural member of the wing, running spanwise at right angles (or thereabouts depending on wing sweep) to the fuselage. The spar carries flight loads and the weight of the wings while on the ground.
What is Spanwise airflow?
On a straight wing airplane, all of the airflow over the wing travels parallel to the aircraft’s chord line. But, on a swept wing, only some of the air flows parallel to the chord line. The other part flows perpendicular to the chord – this is called spanwise flow.
What is the difference between the chord and span?
The distance from the leading edge to the trailing edge is called the chord, denoted by the symbol c. The ends of the wing are called the wing tips, and the distance from one wing tip to the other is called the span, given the symbol s.
What is the span of an airfoil?
Wing span is the distance from one wing tip to the other wing tip. The ratio of wing length to chord is called the aspect ratio. The amount of lift and drag generated by an aerofoil depends on its shape (camber), surface area, angle of attack, air density and speed through the air.
Why do planes have swept wing?
In transonic flight, a swept wing allows a higher Critical Mach Number than a straight wing of similar Chord and Camber. This results in the principal advantage of wing sweep which is to delay the onset of wave drag. A swept wing is optimised for high speed flight.
What is the curve of a wing called?
The maximum distance between the two lines is called the camber, which is a measure of the curvature of the airfoil (high camber means high curvature). The maximum distance between the upper and lower surfaces is called the thickness.
What is the relationship between the span and chord called?
The ratio of the length (or span) of a rectangular-planform wing to its chord is known as the aspect ratio, an important indicator of the lift-induced drag the wing will create.
Where is the spanwise flow in an aircraft?
Please keep in mind that if direction of airflow is expressed in a spanwise an a chordwise component, these must run parallel to span and chord of the aircraft. Also note that, if airflow over a backwards swept wing has a spanwise component, this airflow path must by definition be longer than the chord it runs from.
How are swept wings different from straight wings?
On a straight wing airplane, all of the airflow over the wing travels parallel to the aircraft’s chord line. But, on a swept wing, only some of the air flows parallel to the chord line. The other part flows perpendicular to the chord – this is called spanwise flow. Only the component of airflow flowing parallel to the chord line accelerates.
Where does the flow go on a swept wing?
Note that the low pressure area over the wing will suck in more air. This answer might also be helpful because it looks closer at the boundary layer. With a swept wing the same happens, but now the flow will not stay at one wing section but show an added sideways component.
How does spanwise flow affect the Mach number?
The other part flows perpendicular to the chord – this is called spanwise flow. Only the component of airflow flowing parallel to the chord line accelerates. So, by reducing the amount of airflow flowing parallel to the chord line, you’ve reduced the amount of acceleration – and delayed your critical Mach number.
