What is spin polarization DFT?
Spin-polarized calculations within the framework of density-functional theory (DFT) are a powerful tool to describe the magnetism of itinerant electrons in solid state materials. The tendency toward magnetism is determined by a competition between exchange and kinetic energy effects.
How do you spin-polarized current?
Spin-polarised electrons can be generated in non-magnetic materials using the following methods: spin injection from a ferromagnet, a magnetic field, an electric field, electromagnetic wave introduction, Zeeman splitting, spin motive force, a thermal gradient and mechanical rotation.
What is a spin-polarized current?
Spin polarization is the degree to which the spin, that is, the intrinsic angular momentum of elementary particles, is aligned with a given direction. This property may pertain to the spin, hence to the magnetic moment, of conduction electrons in ferromagnetic materials giving rise to spin-polarized currents.
Can electrons be polarized?
An electron beam is a quantum system in a mixed state of spin orientations. A beam of electrons can also be partially polarized when the majority of the spins have the same orientation. When the two possible spin orientations are equally populated, then the beam is said to be unpolarized8.
What is spin polarized current?
How is spin current measured?
Spin currents are generally probed using measurements of the effects they produce in the metals through which they flow. They can, for instance, create a voltage drop perpendicular to the direction of the spin current or a torque that turns the magnetization direction of a magnetic film.
What is a polarized charge?
Polarization occurs when an electric field distorts the negative cloud of electrons around positive atomic nuclei in a direction opposite the field. This slight separation of charge makes one side of the atom somewhat positive and the opposite side somewhat negative.
What are the data requirements to do a spin polarised DFT calculation?
The preparation for your system would be divided in several steps. Firstly you have to prepare the bulk cobalt structure. For this, you will have to find space group and wyckoff positions of Co atoms in hexagonal structure. Then you will need to do relax calculation to ensure optimal size and positions of atoms.
How to calculate nspin for LSDA spin polarized calculations?
For LSDA spin-polarized calculations (that is: with a fixed quantization axis for magnetization), set nspin=2. Note that the number of k-points will be internally doubled (one set of k-points for spin-up, one set for spin-down). See example 1 (that is: PW/examples/example01 ).
Do you need nspin keywoard for spin polarized DFT?
Of course, before everything, standard convergence tests (for k pts mesh size and ecut’s) should be made. the spin polarized calculation is similiar to non spin polarized case, but when preparing system you should also use nspin keywoard (for ferromagnetic nspin=2).
How to calculate the spin orbit of an atom?
To make a spin-orbit calculation both noncolin and lspinorb must be true. Furthermore you must use fully relativistic pseudopotentials at least for one atom. If all pseudopotentials are scalar-relativistic, the calculation is noncollinear but there is no spin-orbit coupling.
