What is spin-polarized calculation?
A self-consistent spin-polarized calculation can be started just like a non spin-polarized (hereafter called NM) calculation, except that NSPIN=2 in Category OPTIONS and the starting moments for up and down spins in Category START are made different.
What is spin-polarized DFT?
Spin-polarized calculations within the framework of density-functional theory (DFT) are a powerful tool to describe the magnetism of itinerant electrons in solid state materials.
What is spin-polarized current?
Spin polarization is the degree to which the spin, that is, the intrinsic angular momentum of elementary particles, is aligned with a given direction. This property may pertain to the spin, hence to the magnetic moment, of conduction electrons in ferromagnetic materials giving rise to spin-polarized currents.
What causes spin polarization?
Spin polarization is the degree to which the spin, i.e., the intrinsic angular momentum of elementary particles, is aligned with a given direction. This property may pertain to the spin, hence to the magnetic moment, of conduction electrons in ferromagnetic metals, such as iron, giving rise to spin-polarized currents.
How do you generate a spin current?
Spin current, a flow of spins, is a key concept in the field of spintronics. It is generated by using angular momentum conversion among magnetic angular momentum due to magnetization dynamics, photon angular momentum, angular momentum due to orbital motion of electron, and spin angular momentum [1–3].
Is polarization the same as spin?
In a nutshell, polarization requires a direction of travel to mean something. Spin states do not.
How do you spin polarized current?
Spin-polarised electrons can be generated in non-magnetic materials using the following methods: spin injection from a ferromagnet, a magnetic field, an electric field, electromagnetic wave introduction, Zeeman splitting, spin motive force, a thermal gradient and mechanical rotation.
What is a spintronic device?
Electronic and spintronic devices are devices that use the properties of electrons to transmit, process and store information. Spintronic devices instead use another fundamental property known as spin, which is the intrinsic angular momentum of the electron.
Can photons have 0 spin?
Electrons and quarks (particles of matter) can have a spin of –1/2 or +1/2; photons (particles of light) can have a spin of –1 or +1; and Higgs bosons must have a spin of 0. Though particle spins are tiny, they have an impact on our everyday world.
How do you calculate spin current?
Consider the spin unit ћ / 2, the spin current is defined as js = ћ 2 (v↑ –v↓). We should emphasize that when we say spin-up and down, we have already specified the polarization orienta- tion. Thus a spin current is determined by both the moving direction and the spin polarization of electrons.
How to calculate nspin for LSDA spin polarized calculations?
For LSDA spin-polarized calculations (that is: with a fixed quantization axis for magnetization), set nspin=2. Note that the number of k-points will be internally doubled (one set of k-points for spin-up, one set for spin-down). See example 1 (that is: PW/examples/example01 ).
What happens when spin polarization is different from zero?
The states are still two-component spinors but the total magnetization is zero. If starting_magnetization is different from zero, the code makes a noncollinear spin polarized calculation with spin-orbit interaction. The final spin magnetization might be zero or different from zero depending on the system.
What are the data requirements to do a spin polarised DFT calculation?
The preparation for your system would be divided in several steps. Firstly you have to prepare the bulk cobalt structure. For this, you will have to find space group and wyckoff positions of Co atoms in hexagonal structure. Then you will need to do relax calculation to ensure optimal size and positions of atoms.
Can a spin orbit calculation be done without magnetization?
If starting_magnetization is set to zero (or not given) the code makes a spin-orbit calculation without spin magnetization (it assumes that time reversal symmetry holds and it does not calculate the magnetization). The states are still two-component spinors but the total magnetization is zero.
