What is synchronous motor and how it works?
A synchronous motor is one in which the rotor normally rotates at the same speed as the revolving field in the machine. As mechanical load is applied, the rotor slips back a number of degrees with respect to the rotating field of the stator, developing torque and continuing to be drawn around by this rotating field.
How is a synchronous motor constructed?
A synchronous motor is generally made up of two parts, a stator the stationary part of the machine that carries the armature winding in which the voltage is generated, and a rotor the rotating part of the machine that produces the main field flux. Of course, this motor has other parts and components.
How does a synchronous motor achieve synchronous speed?
The speed of a synchronous motor is dependent on the frequency of the power source and the number of poles the stator has. RPM increases directly with frequency and inversely as the number of poles.
Where do we use synchronous motor?
Small synchronous motors are used in timing applications such as in synchronous clocks, timers in appliances, tape recorders and precision servomechanisms in which the motor must operate at a precise speed; speed accuracy is that of the power line frequency, which is carefully controlled in large interconnected grid …
What are the starting methods of synchronous motor?
The different methods used to start a synchronous motor are :
- Using Pony Motors : By using the small pony motors like a small induction motor, we can start the synchronous motor.
- Using Small D.C. Machine :
- Using Damper Winding :
- As a Slip Ring Induction Motor ( Synchronous Induction Motor ) :
What is the main application of synchronous motor?
Which type of starter is used for synchronous motor?
Controllers for synchronous motors have four components: a three-pole starter for the ac stator circuit, a contactor for the dc field circuit, an automatic synchronizing device to control the dc field contactor, and a cage-winding protective relay to open the ac circuit if the motor operates too long without …
What are the different methods of starting synchronous motor?
Synchronous Motor Starting Methods Pony Motor Method / Induction Motor. Pony motors are small motors mostly induction motors, which are used to run the rotor near to the synchronous speed. Using Small D.C. Machine. Using Damper Winding. Slip Ring Induction Motor.
What are the basic principles of a synchronous motor?
Synchronous motor work on the principle of magnetic locking. When two unlike strong unlike magnets poles are brought together, there exists a tremendous force of extraction between those two poles. In such condition, the two magnets are said to be magnetically locked.
Why is a synchronous motor a constant speed motor?
Synchronous motor work on the principle of force developed due to the magnetic attraction established between the rotating magnetic field and the main pole feed. Since the speed of rotating magnetic field is directly proportional to frequency the motor operates at constant speed.
Do you know asynchronous motor?
An asynchronous motor is an electric motor powered by alternating current. It is, therefore, what we call an AC motor. This type of engine is also known as an induction motor. The asynchronous motor is based on the currents induced in the rotor from the rotating magnetic field of the stator. That’s why it’s called an induction machine.
