What is the deflection of a cantilever?
Cantilever beams have one end fixed, so that the slope and deflection at that end must be zero.
How do you find deflection of cantilever beam?
Generally, deflection can be calculated by taking the double integral of the Bending Moment Equation, M(x) divided by EI (Young’s Modulus x Moment of Inertia).
How do you measure cantilever deflection?
A majority of the AFM instruments in use today measure the deflection of the cantilever using an optical lever method: a laser beam reflected from the upper surface of the cantilever measures the cantilever angle at the position of the reflection.
What is the maximum deflection of a cantilever?
The deflection limit for cantilever beams set by most design codes is L/180 for live load and L/90 for combined dead & live load. The maximum span depends on the material of the beam (wood, steel or concrete).
Which one method is the best for finding slope and deflection?
Following are the important methods which are used for finding out the slope and deflection at a section in a loaded beam: Double integration method. Moment–area method. Mecaulay’s method.
What causes the deflection of a cantilever beam?
Just to remind us a simple point load at the end of a cantilever beam causes deflection δ = PL3 / 3EI. If we compare this to the above result we see placing the same load on the beam but uniformly distributed causes 3/8 of point load deflection, even though the stiffness remains the same.

How many segments are in a cantilever beam?
In the pictures below, the upper beam is solid, the middle one is split into two segments and the lower one is split into 3 segments. Each segment is allowed to slide in respect to its neighbors.
How many times can a cantilever beam slide?
Each segment is allowed to slide in respect to its neighbors. It is clear that the deflection of the 3 segments beam is 9 times the full one. In the case the segments are bonded together (i.e cannot slip in respect to each other) – We get the same results for all the case.
