What is the difference between a one sided and two-sided t-test?
A one-tailed test has the entire 5% of the alpha level in one tail (in either the left, or the right tail). A two-tailed test splits your alpha level in half (as in the image to the left). A null hypothesis might state that the mean = x. You’re testing if the mean is way above this or way below.
Can a paired t-test be one sided?
Note that when you do a paired t-test, you are testing if the mean difference between pairs is significantly different from 0. You describe a one-tailed t-test which gives you the option to test if there is a difference in one direction (e.g. ‘greater than’ in the case you describe).
Why would we choose a one sided instead of a two-sided hypothesis test?
One-tailed tests have more statistical power to detect an effect in one direction than a two-tailed test with the same design and significance level. One-tailed tests occur most frequently for studies where one of the following is true: Effects can exist in only one direction.
How do you know if a paired t-test is significant?
If the p-value is less than or equal to the significance level, the decision is to reject the null hypothesis. You can conclude that the difference between the population means is statistically significant. Use your specialized knowledge to determine whether the difference is practically significant.
When to use a paired t test?
The paired t-test is used when the variable is numerical in nature (for example, the height of a person or the weight of a person) and the individuals in the sample are either paired up in some way (such as a husband and wife) or the same people are used twice (for example, preprocedure and postprocedure).
What is an example of a paired t test?
The paired sample t-test is also called dependent sample t-test. It’s an univariate test that tests for a significant difference between 2 related variables. An example of this is if you where to collect the blood pressure for an individual before and after some treatment, condition, or time point.
What is a paired and unpaired t-test?
Paired means that both samples consist of the same test subjects. A paired t-test is equivalent to a one-sample t-test. Unpaired means that both samples consist of distinct test subjects. An unpaired t-test is equivalent to a two-sample t-test.
What is paired t test in statistics?
Paired Sample T-Test. The paired sample t-test, sometimes called the dependent sample t-test, is a statistical procedure used to determine whether the mean difference between two sets of observations is zero. In a paired sample t-test, each subject or entity is measured twice, resulting in pairs of observations.
