What is the difference between high-side and low side drivers?
High-Side vs. A low-side driver is placed between the load and ground, whereas a high-side driver, shown in 2(b), is placed between the load and the supply voltage. The low-side driver is often used for powertrain-related loads such as motors, solenoids, and heaters.
What is high-side and low side gate driver?
A semiconductor switch placed in the upper circuit with respect to an external load is referred to as high-side drive (power supply side), and when mounted in the lower circuit is called low side drive (ground side).
What is a high-side switch?
High-side load switches are highly integrated power switches used to connect and disconnect a power source from a load. Using a load switch instead of a regular MOSFET offers several features including simplified design, small footprint, and protection features. Using MOSFETs as power switches.
What makes a PNP a high side transistor?
High-Side Transistors (Note the FET has a Pull-Up resistor.) For a PNP BJT, the emitter connects to the voltage source, while the collector connects to the load’s positive side. Looking at the schematic drawing for an NPN and PNP, the PNP might look like it is upside down.
When to use a NPN driver with a PNP MOSFET?
It is very common to use an NPN driver with a PNP BJT or P-Channel MOSFET, when the load voltage is higher than the signal voltage. Without a driver, the transistor may never turn-off. The driver, effectively, boosts the driving voltage high enough to unbias the Vbe or Vgs junction of the transistor.
When to use a high side transistor driver?
Until the FET is saturated, its Rds-ON can be relatively high, limiting the maximum current it can handle. It is very common to use an NPN driver with a PNP BJT or P-Channel MOSFET, when the load voltage is higher than the signal voltage. Without a driver, the transistor may never turn-off.
Can a p channel be used on a low side transistor?
For a P-Channel MOSFET, the source connects to the voltage source, and the drain connects to the load’s positive side. Like with the low-side, you probably want to use an enhancement mode MOSFET. Keep in mind that you may never find a depletion mode P-Channel.
