What is the difference between SMT and THT?
SMT is the method of placing components (like an SMD) on the board. Through-hole-technology (THT) involves inserting leads of components into drilled holes in the PCB. Leads can then be soldered onto pads or lands on the solder side of the board, usually with a simple soldering iron by hand or wave soldering process.
Why SMT is needed?
Smaller size and reduced weight are the two main advantages to SMT. Components can be aligned closer together and end products will be more compact and lightweight. Here are additional benefits of SMT: Component placement autocorrect – The solder surface tension forces components into alignment with solder pads.
What is SMT and through hole?
Through-hole mounting is the process by which component leads are placed into drilled holes on a bare PCB. Whereas SMT components are secured only by solder on the surface of the board, through-hole component leads run through the board, allowing the components to withstand more environmental stress.
What does SMT stand for?
SMT
| Acronym | Definition |
|---|---|
| SMT | Simultaneous Multi-Threading |
| SMT | Service Management Tool (software) |
| SMT | Senior Management Team |
| SMT | Store Manager Trainee (various companies) |
How many steps are in the SMT process?
SMT assembly process mainly consists of three steps: solder paste printing, components placement and reflow soldering.
How are connectors used in the SMT process?
For use in the SMT process, the components must satisfy certain requirements regarding their geometry, the materials and surfaces used and packaging. Additional adjustments are necessary for connectors in particular. Fig. 7: Component shape-supporting suction surface Fig. 8: Integrated raised suction surface Fig. 9: Additional pick-and-place pad
When do I need to use a SMT?
As a rule, SMT should be considered if: You need to accommodate a high density of components. The need is for a compact or small product. Your final product needs to be sleek and light despite component density. The requirement specifies the high-speed/frequency functioning of the device.
Do you need pick and place pads for SMT?
If appropriate surfaces are not available or are too small, the component must be fitted with additional pick-and-place pads (Fig. 9). Ideally, a component capable of being assembled via an automatic device will not have an additional pad. 4Requirements on connectors for the reflow process
Which is better SMT or through hole mounting?
SMT components are more compact leading to higher component density as compared to through-hole mounting. Through-hole mounting is better suited to the production of large and bulky components that are subjected to periodic mechanical stresses or even high-voltage and high-power parts.
