What is the function of filter in VFD?
VFD output filters begin with a reactor and are built out with additional resistive and capacitive components, forming a low pass filter. They are designed to limit the peak voltage to 1,000 volts. These filters are typically applied to applications lead lengths are up to about 1,000 feet.

EMC filters are essential components that prevent interferences in machines and systems. They reduce the interference emissions while improving immunity from internal and external interferences.
What are variable frequency drives used for?
The most common uses of a VFD are for control of fans, pumps and compressors, and these applications account for 75% of all drives operating globally. Soft starters and across-the-line contactors are other, less sophisticated types of motor controllers.
Why we use EMI filter?
What does an EMI filter do? When attached to devices or circuits, EMI filters can suppress electromagnetic noise transmitted through conduction. These filters extract any unwanted current conducted through wiring or cables, while allowing desirable currents to flow freely.
What is THDi in VFD?
The Total Harmonic Current Distortion (THDi) of a variable frequency drive (VFD) depends on the pulse assys. Standard for the VFD is 6 pulse, with a THDi at or about 40%, +/- 5%. These levels are also induced by source impedance, that being the line supply and distortions within it.
What causes harmonics in VFD?
Harmonics are caused by the first stage of a VFD (the rectifier). The distortion of input current feeding this rectifier on a standard (6-pulse) VFD ranges between 70-100%. AC line reactors (see Figure 8) and DC link chokes (reactors) will make the current drawn from the power line more sinusoidal (see Figure 9).
Where is the input filter on a variable frequency drive?
The input filter must be installed upstream on mains side of the variable frequency drive. The variable frequency drives meet the requirements of the low-voltage directive 2006/95/EC and the requirements of the EMC directive 2004/108/EC. The EMC product standard EN 61800-3 relates to the VFD system.
Why do you need an EMC filter for optidrives?
EMC filters reduce the transfer of electromagnetic noise between the drive and mains power supply. All Optidrives are fitted as standard with an internal EMC filter, except where specified by the customer, and for most industrial applications, this will be sufficient.
How are EMC filters in inverter drives connected?
If you have an earth leakage protection system on the supply to an Inverter with First Environment filters, it will trip. Some of the filter caps are connected to earth and make a pulse of current when the power is turned on.
Are there EMC filters in Parker SSD drives?
The Parker SSD Drives products we sell up to 7.5kW all include EMC Filters to the First and Second environment, as long as they have ‘-F-‘ in the product code. Most of the others include Second Environment filters, unless they say otherwise.
