What is the maximum length for a serial cable?
50 feet
Serial (RS-232) – The maximum cable length that we suggest is 50 feet. At lengths greater than 50 feet, there may be a loss in signal integrity which may affect data.
How far can RS-232 go?
The RS-232 standard 9600bps port will drive 15 metres of shielded cable. More precisely, an RS-232 line driver will operate against a capacitance of up to 2500 picoFarad with low enough skew to allow a 9600bps signal to be recovered. If you select a cable with lower capacitance you can drive further distances.
What is the other name of RS232?
Data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE) and data terminal equipment (DTE) network. Telefonnetz refers to a telephone network; EIA-232 is an old name for RS-232, the serial communication standard.
What’s the maximum length of a serial cable?
A maximum of 16 cables can be used in a single chain. Serial cables primarily consist of DB9, DB15, DB25, and DB37. They are also called RS-232, although that term usually refers to DB9 specifically. All of these have a maximum individual length of 15 meters (slightly over 49 feet).
Is it possible to make long serial cables?
You can make realllllly long serial cables– if at slow speed and shielded. The speed of light gets in your way at some point. In my experience well installed RS232 lines over decent telephone and Cat5e cable can go quite a considerable distance. We have a serial dot matrix printer hooked up to a PC that’s nearly 600m away.
What’s the maximum distance a cable can be used?
Individual cables are only manufactured up to 4.5 meters (14.8 feet) long; going further than that means the cables must be daisy-chained together. A maximum of 16 cables can be used in a single chain. Serial Cables – 15 meters (49 feet, standard); 60 meters (197 feet, with signal degradation)
What kind of asynchronous cable do I Need?
You probably have an asynch cable connection (meaning neither side sends a clock signal). General guidelines says most cables will support 115k baud, using x-on/x-off protocol (stop start is data on tx/rx lines) are limited to 30M, or about 100′ with shielded cable.
