What is the meaning of room tone?
In filmmaking and television production, presence, also known as room tone, or simply room sound, is the “silence” recorded at a location or space when no dialogue is spoken. It is used to help create the film sound track, where presence may be intercut with dialogue to smooth out any sound edit points.
What is ambient sound and how is it different from room tone?
From a sound editing point of view, Room tone is recorded on set with the production, and is what a dialog editor uses to work their magic. Ambiance is what a sound fx editor will cut in as a background for a given scene.
What causes Room Tone?
That sound is caused by many factors – lights, refrigerators, air conditioning, people, furniture, as well as the “sound” of the microphone, the “sound” imparted by the recording device and the specifications of the recording.
What level should Room Tone be at?
Room tone refers to the level of ambient room noise when no one is speaking. Room tone should be well below -30 if you actually want it to sound like “silence”, I would suggest around -60 for complete silence.
