What is the purpose of a wastegate?
The wastegate is employed to control boost pressure via bypassing a controlled amount of exhaust gas from interacting with the turbine wheel. It consists of nothing more than a disk that closes against a passageway that redirects a portion of the exhaust flow.
What does porting a turbo do?
Porting a turbo is an attempt to quicken spool and allow more air to be pushed into the engine. Basically the more air a turbo pushes the more power you can attain. There are 2 sets of inlets and outlets on a turbo, the compressor side (intake, cold) and the turbine side (Exhaust, hot).
