What is the purpose of Equirectangular projection?
The projection maps Longitude and Latitude (vertical and horizontal map lines) to even straight lines. Because the map is stretched out, it can not be used in navigation. Its main use is to show large map areas.
How does equirectangular projection work?
An equirectangular projection of the Earth; the standard parallel is the equator. The projection maps meridians to equally spaced vertical straight lines, and circles of latitude to evenly spread horizontal straight lines. The projection is neither equal area nor conformal.
What is equirectangular format?
The cubic format consists of 6 undistorted, perspective images: Up, down, left, right, forward and backward, whereas the equirectangular format is one single stitched image of 360° horizontally and 180° vertically. Images of this format are automatically detected as spherical images.
What is an equirectangular panorama?
This is a type of projection for mapping a portion of the surface of a sphere to a flat image. In an equirectangular panoramic image all verticals remain vertical, and the horizon becomes a straight line across the middle of the image. Coordinates in the image relate linearly to pan and tilt angles in the real world.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a Mercator projection?
Advantage: The Mercator map projection shows the correct shapes of the continents and directions accurately. Disadvantage: The Mercator map projection does not show true distances or sizes of continents, especially near the north and south poles.
What is Equatorial projection?
The planar equatorial aspect places the earth’s equator in the center of the map projection. The equatorial gnomonic map projection maintains all meridians, except the meridian defining the circumference of the map projection, as straight lines.
What’s the minimum recommended resolution for VR videos?
Regarding resolution, we know that videos for 360 need to be 4K minimum. As 360 players wrap an equirectangular video into a sphere, the viewer is only going to see a small section of that video. At 4K UHD, we end up viewing a window of about 1.3K resolution.
What is rectilinear projection?
Rectilinear is a type of projection for mapping a portion of the surface of a sphere to a flat image.
What equirectangular 360?
An equirectangular panorama consists of a single rectangular image whose width and height correlate as 2:1. Such images can be captured with a 360-degree camera or using “cheap and dirty” methods like this. (Images with a single spherically distorted texture can be instantly tested here.)
What are the disadvantages of the Robinson projection?
Advantage: The Robinson map projection shows most distances, sizes and shapes accurately. Disadvantage: The Robinson map does have some distortion around the poles and edges.
What is the Mercator projection best used for?
This projection is widely used for navigation charts, because any straight line on a Mercator projection map is a line of constant true bearing that enables a navigator to plot a straight-line course.
What are the 4 map projections?
What map projections do we use?
| Projection | Type |
|---|---|
| Mercator | cylindrical |
| Robinson | pseudo-cylindrical |
| Transverse Mercator | cylindrical |
Who is the inventor of the equirectangular projection?
Equirectangular projection. The equirectangular projection (also called the equidistant cylindrical projection, geographic projection, or la carte parallélogrammatique projection, and which includes the special case of the plate carrée projection or geographic projection) is a simple map projection attributed to Marinus of Tyre,…
How does the equirectangular projection work for meridians?
The projection maps meridians to vertical straight lines of constant spacing (for meridional intervals of constant spacing), and circles of latitude to horizontal straight lines of constant spacing (for constant intervals of parallels ). The projection is neither equal area nor conformal.
Is the equirectangular projection an equal or conformal projection?
The projection is neither equal area nor conformal. Because of the distortions introduced by this projection, it has little use in navigation or cadastral mapping and finds its main use in thematic mapping.
How to convert spherical coordinates to equirectangular projection coordinates?
Transform the photo-sphere spherical coordinates into cartesian coordinates ( [x,y,z] vectors). Apply rotation matrices to the coordinate just like the camera was rotated (ha,va). Transform the cartesian coordinates back to spherical coordinates, and these will be your longitude and latitude.
