Browse Encyclopedia (eXit button) Also called a “close” or “exit” button, clicking or tapping the X removes the current window, dialog box or popup message from the screen. It is also used to delete text and graphics. The X in Windows is always visible and clicking it closes the application.
Clicking any “X” below the top-right corner “X” closes the document, file, tab, or window in the program, but not the entire program. Clicking the X for the Document1 tab closes the document window, but leaves the TextPad program open.
What is the difference between file exit?
Answer: When you close a document in Word, the document itself leaves your screen and you can no longer edit it. The program remains open for you to switch to another document. When you exit Word, the entire program closes and must be opened again in order to edit any documents.
What’s the difference between the cancel and close button?
The reason being that the cancel button enables users to have an obvious option to close or get away from the popup which the X button enables user to close the popup intuitively without having to look at the content.
The close button is a recognized part of the Windows environment. Pretty much every application uses a cross at the top right corner to close a window. Therefore, based on their experience of other applications, all users already know what the cross should do.
Idea One: Have a cancel button next to the submit button at the bottom of the pop-up. Idea Two: Have an ‘X’ button on the top right of the pop-up signifying close the pop-up. If your pop-up contains a text field the user means there should enter some info there and a result of good interaction should be call button Save / Continue or similar.
What happens when you click the X button?
When users intend to dismiss a modal or view by clicking the X button, but the system instead completely cancels the process and clears all their work, it is disheartening at best, and maddening at worst.
