What is the secondary winding of an ignition coil?
The secondary winding consists of thousands of turns of smaller wire, insulated from the high voltage by enamel on the wires and layers of oiled paper insulation. The coil is usually inserted into a metal can or plastic case with insulated terminals for the high voltage and low voltage connections.
How do you test primary and secondary coil resistance?
Static Testing
- Remove the coil from the vehicle.
- Test the resistance of the primary circuit by setting the multimeter to the ohms setting.
- Test the secondary circuit by attaching one lead to the negative terminal of the coil, and the other to the terminal where the spark-plug wire plugs in.
What is the function of the secondary coil system in an ignition?
Principle of operation of the secondary ignition circuit The coil is the heart of the ignition system. Essentially, it is nothing more than a transformer which takes 12 volts from the battery and increases it to a point where it will fire the spark plug as much as 40,000 volts.
What is turn ratio on a ignition coil?
The turns ratio compares the number of windings in the primary and secondary circuits. Generally, a higher turns ratio will result in higher output voltage. 100:1 is a common ratio.
How do you check ignition coil resistance?
Resistance can be measured with a Multimeter.
- Set the multimeter to measure resistance (ohms).
- Connect the positive lead to the positive terminal of the coil.
- Connect the negative lead to the negative terminal.
- A typical value would read 0.4 – 2 ohms.
How do you check the primary resistance of an ignition coil?
What happens in the ignition coil every time the primary circuit is turned off?
When current is turned OFF to the primary windings, the magnetic field collapsed very quickly. Any defect in the primary or secondary ignition circuits will lower the time that current flows across the spark plug gap. If secondary voltage is tool low or current flow is too short (low power) the cylinder will misfire.
How to test primary and secondary ignition coil circuits?
This ensures that you are testing only the coil, as it is isolated from other vehicle components. Test the resistance of the primary circuit by setting the multimeter to the ohms setting. Connect one terminal to the positive side of the coil, and the other terminal to the negative side. Take the reading from the meter.
How can you measure resistance of ignition coil?
If a high-voltage diode is built into an ignition coil to suppress sparks, it is not possible to measure the resistance of the secondary coil. Connect a voltmeter in series between the secondary winding of the ignition coil and a battery.
How does the secondary winding of an ignition coil work?
This is possible because the secondary voltage of the closing spark has opposite polarity to the ignition spark. The diode blocks in this direction. For single-spark coils, the second output of the secondary winding is routed to ground via terminal 4b.
What’s the difference between electronic and secondary ignition?
Over the years, secondary ignition systems have changed, mainly to make the systems more reliable, durable and adjustable to suit the needs of modern engines. These days you can get both electronic ignition systems and distributorless ignition systems. The electronic system has an ECM controlling the opening and closing of the primary circuit.
