What is the value of high impedance?
Impedance is a complex measurement of a device’s resistance to the flow of electrical energy. For microphones the impedance value refers to its output resistance at 1 kHz. (high Z = approx. 50,000 ohms) because they reflect noise more effectively and long cables (up to 200 ft.)
Why is high impedance important?
The high impedance ensures that it draws very little current. It is the amplifier’s task to convert a low energy, voltage-driven signal into a higher-voltage output signal. Low impedance circuits can be dangerous because of the high current draw that they produce. Op amps avoid this by having very high input impedance.
What does a high impedance meter do?
Meters with a high input impedance draw almost no current through the meter while testing a circuit. Multimeters have high input impedance (you can measure low voltage on logic circuits).
Is 80 ohm or 250 ohm better?
The 80 ohm version is more for monitoring and fun listening use, and the 250 ohm version is better for critical listening applications. Often, the 80 ohm version is cited as having more bass…and this is true. A similar quality of bass is still present on the 250 Ohm model, but the highs are more harsh and strident.
The meter has a high output impedance and acts like a constant current source (the current through the load is independent of the load impedance). The small voltage drop across the load is proportional to the load impedance. This voltage produces the meter deflection on the calibrated scale.
