What is Trifilar winding?

What is Trifilar winding?

A bifilar coil is an electromagnetic coil that contains two closely spaced, parallel windings. In engineering, the word bifilar describes wire which is made of two filaments or strands. It is commonly used to denote special types of winding wire for transformers. For three strands, the term trifilar coil is used.

How does a toroidal inductor work?

Due to the symmetry of a toroid, little magnetic flux escapes from the core (leakage flux). Thus a toroidal inductor/transformer, radiates less electromagnetic interference (EMI) to adjacent circuits and is an ideal choice for highly concentrated environments.

What do you need to know about winding a toroid?

If the toroid was a bi-filar or tri-filar, don’t forget to re-twist the leads before winding the one turn back on the toroid. After re-twisting the wires, make sure that the bare tinned leads are not shorted. Next you must count the turns of wire on the toroid to confirm that you have the correct number.

How do you unwind a toroidal winding guide?

First, unwind one turn from each end of the toroid. If this is a bi-filar or tri-filar toroid you will need to untwist the leads and work with one at a time. Also make sure that you have enough clearance between the untwisted leads so that heating one won’t cause a short with any of the other leads.

Why are toroids used for AC current sensing?

Toroids with many turns of secondary winding are very useful for AC current sensing and measurement because you can just pass the wire carrying the current to be measured thru them. (We’re not talking about coils with a couple of wimpy turns for RF – though those can be a good source of cores.)

What to use to wind a toroid transformer?

If you’d like a little more physical strength and robustness – perhaps for a current transformer you were going to put around the main AC feed wires in your breaker panel – one possible approach would be to include a narrow zip tie on the outside of the core under the winding before you wind it.
