What is Wasapi vs DirectSound?
WASAPI itself has two modes, Shared and Exclusive. WASAPI Exclusive mode bypasses the Audio Mixer and thus the mixing/resampling layers of DirectSound so audio is passed-through as-is, this is why WASAPI should be used for encoded formats like DTS in order that they can reach the receiver unchanged for decoding there.
Is DirectSound deprecated?
DirectSound is a deprecated software component of the Microsoft DirectX library for the Windows operating system, superseded by XAudio2. After many years of development, today DirectSound is a mature API, and supplies many other useful capabilities, such as the ability to play multichannel sounds at high resolution.
Is DirectSound good?
DirectSound is pretty good. The waveOut… API is still an option. It’s tricky to work with from managed code, but you can play multiple sounds at once this way (in XP and Vista, at least).
Is ASIO bit perfect?
Using ASIO is not necessarily equivalent to bit perfect playback. It can deliver a bit transparent path between the output of the media player and the input of the soundcard but it cannot control what is happening up- or downstream. Even if the output is bit exact, the resampling algorithms may induce jitter resp.
What is waveOut?
waveOut is old, outdated API (Application Programming Interface) for playing digital sounds in 32bit Windows OS’s. Old OS’s (all win9x and nt4) have good waveOut implementation; you should use waveOut output on those for best performance.
Is ASIO better than Mme?
There is no difference in sound quality between ASIO and MME. The difference is in the signal getting from the soundcard to the speaker. ASIO is much faster.
Is ASIO exclusive?
Re: Asio exclusive mode? Some (most?) ASIO drivers are only available as 32-bit drivers, and you’d have to use the 32-bit version of Media Center to use those ASIO drivers. You can’t use 32-bit drivers in 64-bit apps like the 64-bit version of Media Center on Windows.
Which is better DirectSound or XAudio2 for 3D audio?
DirectSound 3D positioning is limited to mono sounds. XAudio2 supports environmental reverb and 3D audio positioning including multi-channel sources, all done in software. XAudio 2.8 is in the Windows SDK, although you need to use the legacy DirectX SDK for XAudio 2.7 to target Windows 7 or Windows Vista–see this post for details.
What does XAudio2 do for Windows Core Audio?
XAudio2 is intended for real-time mixing, source-rate conversion, and DSP effects such as position audio as is commonly used in games. It does not handle audio input which on Windows is typically done with Windows Core Audio (aka WASAPI)–on Windows XP input was part of DirectSound.
What kind of audio input does Windows XP use?
It does not handle audio input which on Windows is typically done with Windows Core Audio (aka WASAPI)–on Windows XP input was part of DirectSound. You can capture data using WASAPI and then process it using XAudio2 for output.
Can you capture data using WASAPI and XAudio2?
You can capture data using WASAPI and then process it using XAudio2 for output. I used OpenAL a while ago, it may fit your needs. The pro’s are the portability and easy setup, you have also access to a good documentation and guide.
