What occurs when water condenses out of the fuel and freezes on the filter and what do some aircraft use to prevent this?
On some aircraft, a large amount of fuel needs to be drained before settled water reaches the drain valve. Use of an anti-icing solution in turbine fuel tanks helps prevent filter blockage from water that condenses out of the fuel as ice during flight.
Will engine still run with master switch off?
In your car, if the electrical charging system fails or the ignition is turned off, your engine stops running. In an airplane, the electrical system can be turned off with the master switch and the magneto-equipped engine will continue running.
What is the purpose of sump?
The main purpose of a sump in a trench is to drain the water that collects at the bottom of a trench. The water will run off the bottom of the trench and into a sump pit or reservoir so the bottom of the trench can remain relatively dry and not hold water.
Where are the most common areas for icing to disrupt the fuel flow?
It has been estimated that 85 percent of the observed aircraft icing occurs in the vicinity of frontal zones. Usually, the greatest horizontal extent of icing is associated with warm fronts, and the most intense icing with cold front. Warm Frontal Icing: This may occur both above and below the frontal surface.
What types of icing do fuel injection systems avoid?

- A fuel injected engine does not prevent impact ice.
- If you suspect impact ice, activate carb heat or, for fuel injected engines, alternate air.
- Expect carb icing when relative humidity is high and temperatures are between 20°F and 70°F.
Why do pilots use sumps in fuel tanks?
Fuel systems are designed with sumps at the low points in each tank and in the system. Pilots use these sumps to remove water and other contaminants that settle out of the fuel. But don’t be lulled into believing it always works.
How does water get into a fuel tank?
As previously discussed, water can enter a fuel system via condensation. The water vapor in the vapor space above the liquid fuel in a fuel tank condenses when the temperature changes. It normally sinks to the bottom of the fuel tank into the sump where it can be drained off before flight.
When do you need to change fuel supplier?
A change in fuel supplier may be required if water continues to be an issue despite efforts are made to keep the aircraft fuel tanks full and sumps drained on a regular basis. Note that fuel below freezing temperature may contain entrained water in ice form that may not settle into the sump until melted.
What causes a fuel tank to be cloudy?
Air in the fuel tends to cause a similar cloudy condition but is near the top of the tank. The cloudiness caused by water in the fuel tends to be more towards the bottom of the tank as the water slowly settles out. As previously discussed, water can enter a fuel system via condensation.
