What projected CRS?
A projected coordinate system is a flat, two-dimensional representation of the Earth. It is based on a sphere or spheroid geographic coordinate system, but it uses linear units of measure for coordinates, so that calculations of distance and area are easily done in terms of those same units.
Is NAD 1983 a projected coordinate system?
UTM NAD83 is a projected coordinate system that represents physical locations abstracted to a flat, cartesian coordinate system. The UTM NAD83 projection uses the GRS80 ellipsoid and a center-of-the-earth anchor point as its datum, both of which are slightly different than the WGS datum.
Is WGS 1984 a projected coordinate system?
The North American 1983 datum (NAD83) uses the Geodetic Reference System (GRS80) ellipsoid while the World Geodetic System of 1984 (WGS84) uses the WGS 84 ellipsoid. For example, the “WGS84 projection” is a geographic one. A UTM projection is a projected one.
What is the difference between geographic and projected coordinates?
A geographic coordinate system (GCS) is a reference framework that defines the locations of features on a model of the earth. A projected coordinate system (PCS) is flat. It contains a GCS, but it converts that GCS into a flat surface, using math (the projection algorithm) and other parameters.
What is the CRS for Lat Long?
According to a given CRS, the lat-lon is absolute (i.e. one location has one coordinate value). A CRS includes a geodetic datum which includes the ellipsoid definition, optioally a prime meridian (often defaults to Greenwich, UK – sets the origin of longitude values), angular unit (usually degrees), and axes.
Why is WGS 84?
It is a global datum, which means that coordinates change over time for objects which are fixed in the ground. Therefore it is important that coordinates in terms of WGS84 have a time associated with them, especially where the best levels of accuracy are required. Note: There are multiple realisations of WGS84.
Is NAD 1983 geographic or projected?
The GRS 1980 spheroid is almost identical to the World Geodetic System (WGS) 1984 spheroid. The WGS 1984 and NAD 1983 coordinate systems are both earth-centered.
