Is a service a process?
A service is a process which runs in the background and does not interact with the desktop. In Windows, services almost always run as an instance of the svchost.exe process, the windows service host process; however there are sometimes exceptions to this.
You can manage service applications by using the SharePoint Central Administration website or by using Windows PowerShell 3.0. Read the following articles about managing and sharing SharePoint Server service applications. Assign or remove administrators of service applications in SharePoint Server. Delete a service application in SharePoint Server.
An official Way and a Field Engineer way. For more information about service applications and services, see Technical diagrams for SharePoint 2013. If you plan to use Office Web Apps, you must install and configure them to work with SharePoint 2013.

Service applications are associated to web applications by service application connections.
