What type of data is elevation data?
Digital elevation data are sets of elevation measurements for locations distributed over the land surface. Elevation data have many practical uses ranging from environmental to urban. Slope and aspect can be directly derived from elevation. Stream delineation and subsequently watershed boundaries can also be derived.
What type of data is elevation in GIS?
Elevation sources. An elevation source contains the data that defines the elevation surface. An elevation surface can have more than one elevation source, and you can combine different types. Local elevation sources can be either a raster that contains elevation information or a TIN dataset.
What is the elevation of a map?
Elevation is distance above sea level. They can be shown on maps by contour lines, which connect points with the same elevation; by bands of color; or by numbers giving the exact elevations of particular points on the Earths surface. Maps that show elevations are called topographic maps.

When using elevation data it is important to know what the elevation values represent. These values can represent the surface of the bare Earth, the surface of the features on the Earth (i.e., top of the canopy), or somewhere in between.

Examples of interval data includes temperature (in Celsius or Fahrenheit), mark grading, IQ test and CGPA. These interval data examples are measured with equal intervals in their respective scales. Interval data are often used for statistical research, school grading, scientific studies and probability.

The 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) products and services available through The National Map consist of standard digital elevation models (DEMs) at various horizontal resolutions, and elevation source (lidar) and associated datasets. In 2020, Digital Elevation Models were migrated to a new data delivery format called Cloud Optimized Geotiff.
