What type of engine is on a Boeing 737?
CFM International CFM56
Boeing 737-800/Engine types
The CFM56-7B is the exclusive engine for the Boeing Next-Generation single-aisle airliner. In total, over 8,000 CFM56-7B engines are in service on 737 aircraft, making it the most popular engine-aircraft combination in commercial aviation.
How many engines are on a Boeing 737?
The -200 was basically just a longer version of the 737-100. In the 1980s Boeing made the -300, -400, and -500 models. Boeing called these models the Boeing 737 Classic series. The 737 Classics could carry more passengers, and they had new engines: CFM56 turbofans….

Why are the bottom of Boeing 737 engines flat?
Subsequently, the engines on future 737s were flattened along the bottom. This allowed them to contain a larger fan and turbine without compromising on ground clearance. The solution was not perfect, as it did have certain negative aerodynamic properties, causing more drag than a round engine.
What kind of engine does the Boeing 737 have?
Earlier Boeing 737 versions (100 and 200) seem to have a more rounded shape. The engine in question is a CFM56 turbofan engine which is larger than the JT8D the plane was originally designed for and thus has less ground clearance.
What makes a jet engine round or thin?
Axial-compressor jet engines (standard on larger commercial jets) are invariably round and thin 1. Engines with a centrifugal compressor are fatter in the middle and will occasionally be lumpy shapes depending on the internal airflow (some engines completely reverse the flow of air through them, sometimes several times 2 ).
When did the Boeing 737 Classic come out?
The Boeing 737 classic series (-300, -400, and -500 variants) entered service in 1984. This was the first example to feature the French-American CFM56 engines. These are well-known for their non-circular ‘hamster pouch’ design.
