When should you use query parameters vs body?
Usually the content body is used for the data that is to be uploaded/downloaded to/from the server and the query parameters are used to specify the exact data requested. For example when you upload a file you specify the name, mime type, etc.
What is the use of endpoint URL?
Simply put, an endpoint is one end of a communication channel. When an API interacts with another system, the touchpoints of this communication are considered endpoints. For APIs, an endpoint can include a URL of a server or service.
What is an endpoint parameter?
Parameters are options you can pass with the endpoint (such as specifying the response format or the amount returned) to influence the response. There are several types of parameters: header parameters, path parameters, and query string parameters. Not all endpoints contain each type of parameter.
What is the endpoint of a URL?
Yes, the endpoint is the URL where your service can be accessed by a client application. The same web service can have multiple endpoints, for example in order to make it available using different protocols.
Where do parameters go in an endpoint?
Every endpoint uses POST and all parameters are in the body. This is especially true in legacy APIs that accumulated more and more parameters over a decade or so, such that they no longer fit in the query string. While this is more often the case than not, I’d consider it an edge case in API design.
Can a URL be more than one parameter?
URL length: This is mainly an issue when you are sending an array. Obviously an array can easily get very long and the query string parameter names will be repeated for each item. However, even if you are only sending one string, technically that string can be very very long.
Where do you put parameters in an API?
The simplest way to add in all parameter data is to put everything in the body. Many APIs work this way. Every endpoint uses POST and all parameters are in the body.
Is it okay to accept list of parameters?
Most server code will interpret this as a list of values, although many have single value simplifications so you may have to go looking. Delimited values are also okay. If you are needing to send JSON to the server, I don’t like seeing it in in the URL (which is a different format).
