Where is the endplate located?
A vertebral end plate is the transition region where a vertebral body and intervertebral disc interface with each other. A vertebral end plate is commonly described as consisting of 2 layers: Cartilaginous layer (also called cartilaginous endplate) that fuses with the disc.
What does endplate degeneration mean?
Vertebral body endplate degeneration may be detected by the presence of edema or fat within the endplates. Endplate degeneration represents a continuum of different stages of degeneration beginning with bone edema and ending with the endplate sclerosis.
Are endplate fractures common?
Among prevalent fractures, superior endplate fractures predominated (57% superior, 11% inferior; p < 0.0001). After vertebroplasty, 186 incident fractures developed in these 86 patients. Seventy-seven (41%) of these incident fractures occurred adjacent to treated vertebrae.
What are endplate changes in spine?
Vertebral endplate changes/modic changes (MC) are the MRI-images of inflammatory vertebral endplate damage that are often related to general disc degeneration. In individuals with MC, more than 90% will have back pain within 1 year. • MC often causes localized pain 24/7.
What is edematous endplate changes?
Modic type I endplate change is the most controversial and important of the three types described (see Modic endplate change). It is seen on MRI of the spine and represents the presence of low T1 and high T2 signal within the bone marrow of a vertebral body adjacent to a disk. Type 1 change can enhance and be painful.
How do you treat an endplate fracture?
Patients with symptomatic acute or subacute osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures are often considered potential candidates for treatment with vertebral augmentation procedures. Procedures such as vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty provide significant pain relief following stabilization of the fractured vertebra.
What causes endplate fractures?
It is hypothesized that, in a large number of cases of aspecific low back pain, the primary cause of the pain is a fracture of the vertebral endplate caused by compression forces. Clinical studies have shown that, in many low back pain patients, damage of the vertebral bodies and or the intervertebral disc is present.
What causes endplate changes?
1. A mechanical cause: Degeneration of the disc causes loss of soft nuclear material, reduced disc height and hydrostatic pressure, which increases the shear forces on the endplates and micro fractures may occur.
Can you become paralyzed from degenerative disc disease?
A severely herniated disc can cause paralysis. Disc herniation is most common in the lower back (lumbar spine) and neck (cervical spine).
Does drinking water help degenerative disc disease?
Eventually, it can lead to pain and swelling and even a bulging disc or herniated disc. Drinking water to adequately replenish the discs with the amount water needed to work properly can reduce the likelihood of developing back pain.
