Where should we install ADS-B?
The FAA requires ADS-B Out capability in the continental United States, in the ADS-B rule airspace designated by FAR 91.225: Class A, B, and C airspace; Class E airspace at or above 10,000 feet msl, excluding airspace at and below 2,500 feet agl; Within 30 nautical miles of a Class B primary airport (the Mode C veil);
Who is exempt ADS-B?
The timeline to equip with ADS-B is rapidly diminishing, but if you haven’t yet equipped, you may be in luck. If your flight operations don’t fall within the mandated limits, then you are exempt from the January 2020 deadline. However, if you do fall within the limits, your aircraft will be grounded.
How much does it cost to install ADS-B?
The cost to install the ADS-B Out 1090 transponder with extended squitter is priced from $2,000 to $2,400, assuming the aircraft has a Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) GPS source.
Is a transponder required for IFR flight?
A transponder isn’t required for IFR flight under FAR 91
Do you need a GPS transmitter for ADS-B?
This ADS-B Out transmitter must be a panel-installed, certified solution (again, no portable ADS-B Out option). An approved WAAS GPS source is also required, to make sure your reported position is accurate. Remember, though, there is no mandate for ADS-B In equipment.

When does an aircraft not receive ADS-B coverage?
ADS-R coverage is provided wherever an ADS-B Out- and ADS-B In-equipped aircraft is within range of an ADS-B ground station. Aircraft will not receive ADS-R if they are not appropriately equipped or within coverage of the ADS-B ground system.
