Which airfoil is preferred for horizontal stabilizers in aircraft?
A symmetrical airfoil profile should always be used for both the horizontal and vertical stabilizer as the net force acting on both will change direction during the course of flight depending on which direction the elevator or rudder is deflected.
Are cambered airfoils optimized for positive angle of attack?
The component parallel to the relative freestream velocity is called drag. An airfoil is a streamlined shape that is capable of generating significantly more lift than drag. Most foil shapes require a positive angle of attack to generate lift, but cambered airfoils can generate lift at zero angle of attack.
What does cambered mean?
1 : a slight convexity, arching, or curvature (as of a beam, deck, or road) 2 : the convexity of the curve of an airfoil from the leading edge to the trailing edge. 3 : a setting of the wheels of an automotive vehicle closer together at the bottom than at the top.
Why are highly cambered airfoils rarely used in aircraft?
Those with low maximum speed like human powered or electric propulsion aircraft prefer those airfoils because they create the needed lift at the lowest possible speed, so the aircraft can fly with the limited installed power.
Why are some back country stabilizers flat or air foil?
So I was wondering why some back country designs offer, when viewed in cross section, a flat and others an air foil shaped rear horizontal stabilizer. In the certified world for example the ACA Scout has a flat design and the Denali Scout offers an airfoil shape.
Which is better airfoil or flat for horizontal stabilizers?
Jerry (co-owner ACA) mentioned the FAA wanted a “better/bigger” airfoil for the (IO390 Scout) horizontal stabilizers. 230HP and more weight made it the better decision to go with a conventional foil. On my little 180HP Scout I wouldn’t change anything.
How are empennage airfoils chosen during development?
Initially, some generic airfoil is chosen during development and the size is determined from the tail volume of comparable designs. Next, all load cases are determined and checked against the preliminary tail. Its size is adjusted until all requirements can be covered.
