Edson de Castro De Castro then went on to design the initial version of the PDP-8. Afterward, de Castro was frustrated by DEC’s refusal to approve a family of 16-bit computers he wanted to design. So he and other DEC engineers launched Data General in 1968 and created their own 16-bit design.

How tall is the front panel of a PDP 8?

The PDP-8/e front panel is 10.5 inches high (PDF!), or 6 rack units. The PDP-8/I front panel is a bit shorter, 5U high, or 8.75 inches. Another way to come to these values is by inference from the fact that DEC used standard 19 inch wide racks, that being the width of a panel mounted across the front of the rack.

Why did the PDP-8 have a reduced instruction set?

The reduced instruction set computer returned full-circle to the PDP-8’s emphasis on a simple instruction set and achieving multiple actions in a single instruction cycle, in order to maximize execution speed, although the newer computers have much longer instruction words.

What kind of interrupts does the PDP-8 have?

For input and output, the PDP-8 has a single interrupt shared by all devices, an I/O bus accessed by I/O instructions and a direct memory access (DMA) channel.

What was the first model of the PDP-8?

For information about PDP-8’s in general, see PDP-8 family. The PDP-8 (now often known as a Straight 8; the name dates from the late 60’s, apparently adopted to allow disambiguation), the first model of the PDP-8 family, was DEC ‘s major breakthrough, and now considered the first really successful minicomputer.
