Who owns your code?
Under copyright law, the author of a line of software code is the owner of the copyright in that code. Literally, the person who puts their fingers on the keyboard and types out a line of software code is the “author” and owns the copyright to the code.
Do developers own their code?
Use ownership of the code as a negotiating point: A developer generally owns the code he or she creates. If the client insists on ownership, or an exclusive license to that code, use that to negotiate. You can ask that the client pay a premium for exclusive rights to the code, or ownership of the code.
