Why are fields in datasheet view read only?
The selection required data to be pasted in the ‘Modified by’ field, which is read-only. Have just spent a few hours going through the suggestions on the post. Finally managed to resolve the read only issue by identifying the columns that were causing the problem and removing from my dataset.
Why is this view read only in SharePoint?
You can observe this by seeing the message “This view is read-only” at the bottom of the datasheet. The Microsoft SharePoint Content Approval setting has been turned on for the list. The Datasheet View control doesn’t support making edits to lists that have Content Approval turned on.
Are there any columns that are always read only?

From my experience, this is not possible through the SharePoint Dataview Sheet View. This is a new feature in 2010 and although super delicious and powerful, it still has a lot of issues that need to be resolved before it will be as powerful as it can be – in 2013, Microsoft has made improvements as per this article from MSDN
Is the metadata column editable in datasheet view?
To answer your question – in no state are metadata columns editable in datasheet view. One of our clients had the same issue and they ended up going with ShareGate’s migration tools.
