Why are keyboards not straight?
This is largely a case of path dependency. Originally keyboards had to have a staggered layout to fit the mechanical linkages between the keys and the levers. After that, it was what industry was tooled up to make, and what people were used to.
Why are keyboards arranged that way?
The “qwerty” keyboard arrangement stems from mechanical typewriters. The keys are arranged to make fast typing difficult as old typewriters would easily jam. Of course humans being adaptable sorts have learned to overcome this obstructionist system and now (some folks) type faster than they talk, or even think.

Ortholinear keyboards are designed to minimize the amount of finger movement, making them more efficient. They do come with a learning curve because you’ll have to get used to a new keyboard layout to some degree. But the layout is relatively the same as a staggered or normal keyboard.
Is Ortholinear better than staggered?
Ortholinear keyboards are intended to be easier to use. They are far more naturally ergonomic than a staggered keyboard, if you make use of a wrist rest too they compete with even top of the line ergonomic keyboards. Since the keys are smaller and closer together, it makes you much faster at typing too.
Why are keyboard rows staggered the way they are now?
When I put my hands on the home keys on a standard keyboard my hands are at an angle: So the minimal movements to reach keys above/below the home row are also going to be at an angle. So having the rows slightly offset reduces the amount I have to move my hands to type.

Why are two characters on the same key on a half QWERTY keyboard?
In a half QWERTY keyboard, two characters share the same key, which reduces the number of keys and increases the surface area of each key, useful for mobile phones that have little space for keys. It means that ‘Q’ and ‘W’ share the same key and the user must press the key once to type ‘Q’ and twice to type ‘W’.
