Why can I follow but not friend?
It’s simply a follow that piggybacks on the friend request. This makes it so that you don’t see their posts in your feed, but you still remain friends and can still interact with them within the privacy settings they have set for their friends. This happens quite frequently, in fact.
How do you use Follow on Facebook?
You can follow someone’s updates as long as that person has selected the Everybody follow option. Just go to the person’s timeline and click the Follow button, located in the lower-right of the cover photo. You’ll start receiving the person’s public updates immediately.
