Why do electric cars have only one gear?
Electric vehicles don’t feature a multi-speed gearbox like conventional petrol or diesel vehicles. Instead, they have just one gear. This is because they can achieve much higher revs than a standard fuel engine. In contrast, electric motors generate 100 per cent of their torque at very low speeds (under 1,000 rpm).
What is single-speed gearbox?
Using a single-speed gearbox means the drivetrain acts like if you were in top gear in a combustion car. That gear has to move the car at all speeds, from 1 mph to whatever its top speed may be. And that’s fine, even considering that off-the-line acceleration could be improved by having a bonus lower gear.

That’s why cars need gearboxes. To begin with, a car needs a huge amount of force and very little speed to get it moving, so the driver uses a low gear. In effect, the gearbox is reducing the speed of the engine greatly but increasing its force in the same proportion to get the car moving.
