Why do my documents open as read only?
You may find that when you are opening files, they open as read-only. In some cases, this is for added security, such as when you are opening files from the internet, and other times, it can be due to a setting that can be changed.
In the Add Users page:
- In the Users/Groups text box, add the crawling account.
- Under Give Permission, select the Give users permission directly radio button, and then select the Read – can view only check box.
- Click OK.
How do I change a read only file in Open Office?

In Word, click File>Open>Browse, type the name of the site and select Document, as shown below: Also, make sure you are sign into Office desktop apps with the same credentials which you used in SharePoint online to login. As you mentioned other users can open file in desktop application without any issue, only you encounter the issue.
