Why do shadows move from west to east?
Because Earth rotates on its axis from west to east, the Moon and the Sun (and all other celestial objects) appear to move from east to west across the sky. As this occurs, the Moon’s shadow follows it — moving in the same direction — and tracks a path across Earth’s surface.

- Set up your shadow stick and mark the first shadow in the morning.
- Use a piece of string and a second stick to draw a clean arc through this mark and around the stick.
- At midday, the shadow will shrink and disappear.
- Draw a line through the two marks to get an accurate east-west line.
