Why do we need invariants in our code?

Why do we need invariants in our code?

Invariants once introduced in code make it easy, sometimes even trivial to understand where exactly a bug lies, or which component is at fault. Well established invariants greatly help a programmer to reason about their code.

What’s the difference between an invariant and a validation?

Or are they different where Invariants are to protect an object from becoming invalid and validation is to check the validity of the object even after it has changed it’s state (it can be in a valid or invalid state)?

What do you mean by invariant in Java?

Invariant means something that should stick to its conditions no matter whatever changes or whoever uses/transforms it. That is to say, a property of a class always fulfills or satisfies some condition even after going through transformations by using public methods. So, the client or user of this class is ensured about the class and its property.

Which is an example of a class invariant?

A class invariant is simply a property that holds for all instances of a class, always, no matter what other code does. X has the class invariant that there is a y property and it is never null and it has a value of type Y.

How are invariants used in design by contract?

Object invariants can be used to assert that a object must have a valid state throughout the time it exists. This is the design by contract principle. I have used invariants informally using checks in code.

How are invariants introduced in a C + + program?

In languages such as C++, a constructor-destructor pair becomes the best tool for introducing invariants. The proverbial life cycle of an object, begins when the class’ constructor returns and it ends only when the destructor is called. At each point of time in between these two events, the object is said to exist.

Which is the best example of an invariant?

An example of invariant could be that exactly one of two member variables should be null. Or that if one has a given value, then the set of allowed values for the other is this or that… I sometime use a member function of the object to check that the invariant holds.
